Spring 2014: Who, what, where, WHEN and why

I recently returned to Toronto after more than 30 years living outside Canada and have just discovered your excellent journalism review, Spring 2014 issue. Thank you!

The “iWitness” piece is very interesting but no where does it clearly state when the lead incident in the story—the killing of Sammy Yatim—happened! The first sentence cites “a warm July night….” Year please? Two-thirds through the story it states the day (“Two days after the July 27 shooting”) but still no year.

It is only by deduction that I could assume this happened in 2013 (thank you Google for confirming).

Likewise, almost halfway through the article, another orphan month appears: “Mainstream news outlets piled on: a January search….” While I assumed (again) that a month, unattributed to a year, is likely the current one, 2014, this was not clear because the two references to the July incident had no clarifying year and the preceding texts to the January citation citing years mention 1991, 2007, 2011 and 2009.

Editor, please!

Sincerely,
Ellen Tolmie
