He worked hard with me (a guy in the throes of knowing that magazine journalism was not and should not be my career path who was also somewhat terrified by the prospect of putting together a magazine feature) to craft my story, to help me get in touch with sources and then to fashion it into something publishable. Even though he basically re-wrote my final draft (something I’m still sheepish about), I still remember that when I mentioned that to him, he looked at me and told me while some of the words were his, the ideas were all mine. A truly classy thing to do and say. And everytime I’ve managed to write something with an elegant turn of phrase or where my prose manages to dance just a little bit, I always think of the time I spent with Don and how he pushed me. Thank you Don.

I am a former student of Tim’s and remember Don well. I live and work in the UK now, and this really made me sad for home today. Thanks to Dave Silverberg for sharing this link with some of our old classmates.
